Chef Gunnell has an extensive background as a chef and baker, and has worked as a chef de cuisine and pastry chef at restaurants around the world. His culinary education has been under the direction of renowned chefs, including Wolfgang Puck, Jimmy Schmidt, and Madeleine Kamman.
The eclectic décor of Cornwall Bakery was inspired by Gunnell’s wife, who had a vision of creating a space full of light and air, but yet clean and simple. The artwork on the walls is by local artist, Suzanne Joy, who painted images from the Detroit Boat Club, a favorite spot of Chef Gunnell.
Gunnell and his wife, Megan, lived in Europe for a year and a half after they were first married. It was there they discovered their passion for artisan breads made fresh each day, and recognized a lack of European style bakeries back home. Gunnell named his bakery after Cornwall, England, from which his ancestors hail. He appreciates the parallel between Cornwall and Grosse Pointe Park, both being quaint harbor towns.
